My 4th day at DFI

Day four of Digital Fluency Intensive

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

share

Including digital technologies into learning. Sharing is not a signal that you have finished your learning. Sharing is a time for feedback, next steps, share your learning with others not in the room.
Rewindable learning to go back and see our progress. Feedback on making a connection to the learning and then thoughtful going forward.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?

Pepeha presentation

Introduce days of weeks, numbers, basic instructions (sit down, come here, look this way) and words to celebrate ( awesome) learning.

Teacher Dashboard you can shuffle the layout of students names for grouping by subject, and also if you want to keep an eye out on a particular student. I have learnt more in one term here than 5 years of teaching!

Smart share is similar to class site, so prefer to use site otherwise I will be doubling up work for myself. This is a pity because I was excited to finally use the groups settings more effectively. But, I am still working digitally by improving with site

Sharing, this file has all the unfiled documents the students need to file, not going to lunch until filed. Should do this each Thursday! Students move to the correct folder, personal items such as photos and documents into the ‘other’ folder
Parents are unable to see students learning through the parent portal. Teacher can’t find the document.
Workspace is prefered for colleges as resources for students but in primary site is prefered.
Highlights you can use this to see if a student is struggling with the learning by not being where they should be.
Gmail you can have a chat to students about sending unkind emails to one another. If you are not going to say this face to face then don’t send it on email.
If a student is sending unkind emails, have a conversation with the student as this is just like bullying a student physically.
Posts keeping a tab on students posting their learning to their blog
Comments enables teacher to see if students are making a connection of their learning to their peers and providing thoughtful questions, being cybersmart, how to comment appropriately online.

Digital Dig Lots of handy shortcut keys and the Kawa of Care

IPADS junior teachers creating lesson plans on IPADS. This is time consuming initially I expect but must be super engaging for the students. A year 0/1 class will spend a term on setting up understanding the basics. Eventually the students will learn how to create their pages for the teacher to monitor their learning on the dashboard. This is Khismira’s class site, pretty amazing to have created all this learning. Her colleagues all pitch in collaboratively creating learning in their expertise or what they would like to trial for their young learners, her class blog and her professional blog. Khismira spoke about how students don’t all have to work on the same curriculum subject but work for themselves on their own learning challenges. I like this idea.

Learning to be creative on Explain Everything an app for IPADS only

Screencastify an app added to My Drive
Reading: student reads their learning to be recorded on screencastify. Edit out the mistakes to hear them reading with fluency as a good reader does. Students need to remember to move their screencastify to the correct folder, ie: media or cybersmart. Find a quiet place to screencastify. Create a screencastify box, cardboard box with foam or egg cartons to provide soundproofing. Webcam can be on if you want your image recorded as you speak. As I am so unphotogenic I won’t be using the webcam (do I really look that old?).

Blog
Labels for posting on your blog is important as a quick reference point. For example, a label on writing, reading, maths, inquiry etc, to add more than one label separate each label with a comma.
Create a new label is the drop down box on Blogger next to publish and revert to draft, or the rubbish bin.
Editing on your published blog posts, click on the pencil
Use the calendar under post setttings to schedule your blog posts.
PTS should be linked to your blog

Not covered but I would love to be able to create like this digitally.
Sisomo- a compelling story told with sight sound and motion - check these retold stories out

What did I learn that could be used with my learners?

Valuable links to digital technologies, shared last week.

Dashboard is often used to check students have filed a new document correctly.
Teacher Dashboard  I could move students into grouping or shift the students I know who have difficulty staying on task.
Sharing will go on the TV screen on Monday morning for students to file their documents in the correct places.
Highlights: will be used for helping students to create files in the correct folders so right from the start we won't have to use sharing so much.
Gmail: I see I will have to have a few private conversations with certain students and overall I will inform them of how to use electronic mail appropriately.
Posts: I had made up a spread sheet and Fiona had also created a form for students to post their links so I could check on their progress on blogging. Now I see I can just click on this link to see posting traffic by students
Comments: I will need to talk to the students about this as it is important that we acknowledge each others learning being cybersmart, and start asking thinking questions. I would like some help with understanding this.

Digital Dig: remind students of the Kawa of Care, put this up on the T.V screen and have it as a class shared reading. I could ask them to use quick key to find on a chosen word to see how many times it appears in a text.

Our class does not have IPADS but I can still get creative and share with my students.

Screencastify: the students will be delighted I now understand this record their learning I see this will have many uses in our learning, explaining a new maths strategy as shareable and rewindable learning. Listening and improving on their oral language, science well lots really. I can record a lesson for the students! Soon I will wonder how I ever taught without this.

Labels for blogs: now I understand this I will be able to guide the students with this as a filing cabinet.

My 3rd day of DFI

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

This was an interesting video from Dorothy Burt today because I did not understand the ‘create’ as being something the students do that is not digital. I appreciate this insight. Creating learning opportunities even with time constraints is crucial. I get tired sitting on a chair. With the learning through playing we can then continue to create with the assistance of digital technologies not as a the expensive pencil but really being creative by applying what google has to offer us to share.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?

Pepeha      Vowels
Weird because I had just had this conversation with a student who is Maori and was creating his profile and when I had asked him if he would like to include his pepeha he said he did not know how to write it. I have created my pepeha as a slide but need to learn how to pronounce the words. I dread this. I used from my phone an app to voice to record the correct pronunciation so I can listen to this to help improve my speech.

Having my own channel means all my settings have been set so I don’t get add’s and other videos that are not appropriate for students. Students do not need their own channel. I will only ever need one channel to create playlists like folders for learning.

Still a bit confused but I get it that you create on drawings and then put the drawings on slides. Plan your slides first just like you would writing.

What did I learn that could be used with my learners?

Te Reo, presently the students are very helpful in correcting me. One student is my main coach. Students to write their pepeha/ record it and present onto their blog as a new post.
As part of the curriculum, for my own growth and creating an inclusive language environment I know I need to include more frequent Te Reo and learning. Students are to include as many of their own language in their writing as possible.

Youtube A safe way to share youtube with students by creating your own playlist to share with students on Dashboard or Site. In the past I have just shared directly from Youtube with the annoying adds, links  and other distractions

Drawings and slides I see so much I can do with these in students being creative here especially the students that are busy and sometimes not on the right site.  all about me, word bank attach a link, collaboration on learning, comic drawing on Cybersmart on school values, school matrix by individual students, stop motion, slides for pepeha, animation
Using media to be creative in their learning.

My 2nd day of DFI

Day two of Digital Fluency Intensive
More on Google My Drive with the experts. We are going through all this treasure trove at a rapid rate of speed. Finding the time to come back and remembering to come back has to be done somehow.

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?
I am beginning to understand the term ‘rewindable learning’ through digital learning we are able to create a digital footprint which shows our learning pathway.
During the day it became more clear to me the use of the students blog posts. Students who record their learning can share it with others to learn. Posts demonstrate learning progress for the years a student is at school and perhaps beyond.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?

Google Forms:Loving it, I had tried unsuccessfully in the past to create one of these on my own. It is so much better when you are given proper instruction.
I created a sheet with 5 questions, to be completed with multichoice, checkbox , short answers, paragraph. I inserted a youtube clip and  images. I even added a pathway, which is when providing a response to a question the form takes you off on to a different slide before returning to the original pathway. I thought I had done a pretty good form but when one of my peers went to complete the form she found many holes in it for me to fix up. Learning from mistakes helps me grow. Forms can lead to mymaps and sheets!
I would very much like to make a slide for students in Term 2 on choose your own story

Google Sheets. There was many useful aspects of sheets shared with me today. A bit overwhelming, some useful to me immediately, some I can see of use with my students and some that is of course useful but will filter out of my brain for lack of use.

I learnt under View, freeze, once selected which row or column you want to stay put so you can scroll and still see the row or column you froze.
Cropping all those rows and columns you no longer want on the sheet, remove cells you don’t need on the sheet. Sort into alphabetical order your students names. Sum:     to highlight the data and click on sum, you can always change the selection you can do this for average etc. You can repeat this by dragging down the formula. You can sort to select z-a . you can add your own code to select specific students and cells by clicking in a new cell and highlighting the cells ,eg: =sum(g2+b1+g4)
Colour tabs/hide sheet
How to number a sheet by typing in the beginning of the number/date sequence. Highlight and drag
Insert a comment into a graph because you want someone to enter data perhaps. Check your sharing settings, click on the + symbol, their email
Conditional highlighting: add colour rules for assessment eg: if the data is less than 4 for PAT add a colour. This is all so yummy!

 mymaps:

This is somehow separate from google maps where you create a map specifically for your own travel itinerary. Mymaps can be linked to google forms and sheets.

What did I learn that could be used with my learners?

Forms:   Endless uses.
I have created a form to collect student voice
Fiona has helped me on my site with a link for students to share their posts each time so I can keep a track on how frequently students are either posting or giving feedback to peers posts.

SheetsStatistics will be fun with sheets.
If we are smart enough we could combine this with surveys in forms perhaps?

mymaps.google.com this is not google maps.
Mapping skills for measurement by road or straight line/ adding decimals/shapes. Useful to share were everyone comes from. I can see the use of this for each time we go on an outside the school we map it, measure each distance, insert a photo of the event, and blog.
We have started by mapping our school trips, writing a recount with learning goals for writing, inserting a photo if we have one and linking it to the learning experience.

Blog posts: rewindable learning.
learning goals, demonstrate learning, 3- 5 blog posts per week.
Word cloud for statistic analysis, word count comparisons between blogs, shared writing document - WALT: Which blog demonstrates your learning best? Quality, work completion as is a job expectation. Sharing on the blog is the completion of the learning. Understand a post is what the students put on their blog. Labels are like a filing cabinet. Alter the dates so blogs appear in the correct order.

Mum and I travelled pretty much non stop from South to North Islands.

My 1st day of DFI

  • What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?
I learnt more about Manaiakalani kaupapa today, for instance:
People started without the use of devices!

  • What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?

Making the most of google.

1: slides and forms: you can use a slide to introduce yourself, include links to your 'blog' and 'site', create stories to be shared and accessible for all students, feedback on the form at completion.
Save extension: when you open a new website and you would like to read it later or save it for later use, all you need to do is click the yellow star for filing this website. Create a new tag or attach to an existing tag you made earlier. For access at a later time just click on the yellow star and find your website stored safely. Initially you will need to go to google store and download for free.
There is a lot for me to learn on google and there is a check list level up.
Slides and google stories: use of slides already. A teacher can share learning on a slide to the students. Google story is a group sharing a document on any learning you would like them to complete together. For instance: student opens up a doc, names it, responds to a question or starts a story perhaps from a prompt (image, statement). When student has completed their part they sign their name to it and then email it the student on their left. Care to close down the document they just typed on. Student opens up the document just shared with them on their right. I also found the Digital Technologies in the curriculum.

Making the most of google documents: making the most out of the tool bar: File: changing the margins under page set up.
Edit:paste without formatting, this way the document remains the same and find and replace, enables you to quickly find a word you want to replace on the document that you would like to replace with another.
Insert: bookmarks and table of contents,  I would need to experiment with this some more when using google documents. I would have loved this to have been around when I wrote my dissertation and had to read much on research. Table of contents works well with the 'title' on your tool bar. In a nutshell bookmarks enables you to create a link to take you back to the 'top of the page', table of contents and titles creates a more book like feature to your google doc. I can see great use for this for college or university students. Table finally someone who knows how to make the most out of this tool. I can now colour it! drawing I can now insert my own or a website image through drawing and chart for statistics.
Tools: explore is useful, this creates a side bar for quick research, websites and images. It was useful to know there is a dictionary, a notepad, preferences for text, voice typing and a translation quick key.
Add ons: I added a few free add ons but not too many as I want to remember what they are for first and actually make use of them. I particularly like the mindmeister when you highlight an area of text it is sorted into a brainstorm layout.Word cloud generator has its uses to demonstrate how frequent certain words are repeated compared to others by generating more definite fonts in a piece of word art and thesaurus of course supports us to find alternative words.
  • What did I learn that could be used with my learners?
Slides at the beginning of the year to introduce students to each other, include their blog. Use slides for introducing prior knowledge and learning along the way. I see many uses of using slides in the classroom and beyond.
Slides and google stories:This does need careful explanation of what you are intending and monitoring to check success and offer assistance. I found my two top reading groups managed this immediately. After a few times completing this successfully I then asked the students to comment on the text that had been shared with them. Commenting on our learning goals, what they liked and what they thought would also be effective feedforward. Students are enjoying this creative way of collaborating together.
find and replace I could see as a useful spelling and vocabulary tool in the class. I can give the students a set text and ask them to use the find and replace on some words to be replaced.
dictionary needs to be reminded to the students for quick access.
Students could use the following two on their blogs,Mindmeister could be useful for brainstorming layouts.Word cloud generator for ideas and vocabulary displays. Thesaurus for important vocabulary building.
  • What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?
Wow! If you have read the above you can see I am in the first stages of becoming a digital robot with authority on the use of GOOGLE!
Now, I just need to remember these wonderful tools are just a click away. It was so rewarding to be told how to use google properly today. I am excited about what I will continue to learn, use and share with my colleagues and students.
